This is a collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center's Music-in-Medicine Initiative and its director Dr. Mei Rui (a neurosurgery professor and award-winning concert pianist), along with medical device company Zeto, to develop a groundbreaking therapeutic brain-computer interface that creates a "neural feedback loop" between human brainwaves and music. The system is designed to potentially help patients with neurological conditions like anxiety and dementia by using Zeto's specialized EEG headsets to capture brain activity across different frequency bandwidths, then translating these brainwave patterns into musical motifs played on a Steinway Spirio self-playing piano through custom algorithms. Patients can learn to control the music with their minds, potentially achieving therapeutic effects similar to breathing exercises for regulating physiological states. By repurposing medical EEG technology and Steinway's player piano system for therapeutic applications neither was originally designed for, the project pioneers a new intersection between musical expression and neurological therapy, demonstrating how digital music technology can have transformative medical applications. This novel convergence of neuroscience and digital music represents an important step toward designing a medical device that could offer new therapeutic pathways for those suffering from neurological conditions.
