Debilitator

Dan Phipps: solo saxophone

Emily Eng: conductor

Debilitator is a composition about loneliness, created by Dan Phipps, Cortland Hyatt, and myself. The piece explores different stages of loneliness using a short motivic cell [015]. The first movement, Shock-Pain-Guilt-Anger, deals with facing loneliness in daily life. The second movement, Sinking into the Sludge, represents the downward spiral of emotions. The third movement, Introspection, is an intimate solo saxophone piece derived from a fixed media track featuring YouTube videos of people discussing their experiences with loneliness. The fourth movement, The Turn, expands on the upward motion and the [015] cell mutates into a major-major seventh chord.
